One of Boston's top doctors has been charged after he allegedly plowed his car into three pedestrians while under the influence of alcohol.

On Tuesday, Dr. Michael Watkins, 64, pleaded not guilty to assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, operating under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene after causing personal injury.

Police claim Watkins was driving in  Boston's South End shortly before midnight on Friday when he honked at a man and two women while they were crossing the street. They say he then put his foot on the accelerator to speed up and crash into them.

The trio were taken to nearby hospitals where they were treated for minor injuries.

Watkins is a prominent vascular surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he serves as the Associate Director at their Center For Diversity and Inclusion.

He is also listed as an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

A graduate of both NYU and Harvard, Watkins has been a practicing surgeon for more than 20 years.

He has been released on $1,5000 bail and is set to return to court in July.

It's unclear whether Watkins deliberately rammed into the pedestrians, but Friday's incident was witnessed by several people.

He is said to have honked at the three pedestrians, before one of them pointed to the crosswalk sign to indicate that they had right of way. Witnesses say Watkins then beeped four more times, before accelerating and crashing into them.

The surgeon did not stop following the incident, and officers found him parked in his car a short distance away.

A police report filed afterward said he  'smelled of alcohol'.

On Tuesday, Massachusetts General Hospital released a statement saying it is following the matter closely.

'The thoughts of the MGH community are with all those who have been affected by this very difficult and unfortunate incident,' it read.

'We wish the pedestrians involved a full and speedy recovery. Dr. Michael Watkins is a highly regarded senior vascular surgeon who has long been a leader on the MGH medical staff as well as in the community.'
